POSITION: Alameda County Fair 100th Celebration
Historian Position
The Alameda County Fair is accepting proposals to assist in compiling and producing a pictorial history of the Alameda County Fair to be displayed at the 2012 Alameda County Fair.
Responsibilities:
Historian will be responsible for researching and compiling Alameda County Fair archive materials currently available that can be used for a pictorial display of the history of the Alameda County Fair over the past 100 years.
Historian will write text, select and scan photos for the displays.
One general display will be created and will be located in a portion of the Hobby/Gem & Mineral Exhibits Building. In addition, area specific displays will be created that will be located in the multiple areas of the Fair.
Fair staff will construct the physical display for the panels to hang on.
- Historian will create the panels using a software template from Western Fairs Association "Exhibit in A Box". The Fair owns a copy of this software template.
- Meet with museums/historical societies in Alameda County as needed to collect additional photos, documents, and other items to be included in the display.
- Focus of the history pictorial display will be Alameda County Fairs. Themes for the various panels will include:
- General Fair History
- Fairgrounds Facilities: buildings, aerial displays, etc.
- Horse Racing at the Fairgrounds
- County Fair Competitive Exhibits
- County Fair Vendors: Commercial Exhibits and Food
- County Fair Entertainment
- County Fair Carnival
- Events
- Livestock/Ranching
Historian will also compile and create panels to be displayed in multiple areas of the Fairgrounds during the annual Fair, ie home arts, gardening, livestock, etc.
Historian will create a separate more in-depth horse racing display will be created which will be in the Grandstand.
Pictorial Panels must be completed by May 31, 2012.
The Alameda County Fair will provide a location at the Fairgrounds for Historian to layout and sort all the archive materials.
The cost to produce the panels will be paid by the Alameda County Fair.

POSITION: Poetry Competition Coordinator
DATE OPEN: December 2, 2011

SALARY: Based on $16.00 per hour rate
POSITION DESCRIPTION
This is a part-time, year-round coordinator position that will report directly to the Exhibits Supervisor. There is a minimal year round time commitment for strategy meetings and overall program development, with an increased time commitment prior to fair, to receive, process, and judge entries.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Work with Exhibit Supervisor to solicit and contract competition show judges.
- Assist in revising and updating competition guidelines and parameters to encourage positive growth of exhibitor participation.
- Demonstrates proficiency in understanding and interpreting state and local fair rules.
- Uniformly enforce all rules and fair policies, as set forth in exhibitor catalog, resolving any conflicts or protests in a professional and ethical manner.
- Communicate with fair management about trends and issues affecting exhibitors, judging, and overall competition.
- Work cooperatively with Fine Art and Photography Coordinators to coordinate exhibit receiving, judging, display, and release of entries.
- Promote competition, working with fair management to provide information for the media and other sources as necessary.
- Coordinate Poetry Reading held during fair for participating artists
QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience or fundamental knowledge of poetry or creative writing competitions is preferred. Ability to work with different types of personalities in a team setting, strong communication skills, and a positive attitude are all important skills necessary for being successful in this position.
